Gyeongpo, Jeongdongjin Sunrise Festival

Gangneung city, a nice viewpoint of a beautiful sunrise, holds the “sunrise event” from December 31 to January 1 every year. Gangneung city provides something special for the tourists visiting Gyeongpo and Jeongdongjin to see the sunrise on the morning of a New Year's day. With various celebrating events such as folk dance and music performance, congratulatory performance, turning the sandglass, and hope wishing event, this festival gives tourists wonderful, romantic and vivid memories. Tourists go back refreshed with rare experience of seeing the first sunrise of the new year.

Gangneung Dano-je Festival (designated by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity)

Gangneung Dano-je Festival has a thousand year history and tradition. This grand festival is the largest in scale in Korea. As one of four main national holidays in Korea (New Year’s Day, Hansik, Dano, and Chuseok), Dano is regarded as the day when the male element in nature is strongest in a year. The festival in Gangneung, Gangwon-do lasts five days before and after May 5th of the lunar calendar. The folk festival includes religious rituals, Dano-je exorcism, and Gwanno masque. At this time, Gangneung is flooded with people who want to enjoy various folk events. Derived from the ancient village festival serving rituals and agricultural ceremonies, Gangneung Dano-je Festival was designated by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. It is not only a local festival but a global one in which people all over the world take part.

Mangwol-je Festival

Mangwol-je festival is made up of three stages from afternoon to midnight on the First Full Moon Day (January 15th of the lunar calendar). Prior to main event, the New Year folk games such as playing yut and turning Mang-u-ri are held on the Dano-je ground. After making the Hwang-deok-bul(big bonfire) in many places, the main event, Mang-wol ritual, follows Gwan-no masque, Nong-ak (farmer’s folk band) performance, and stepping on the god of the earth. After the main event, hanging Yong-mool event is held to pray for plentiful water. Holding the dragon made of straw and wishing for a year of abundance, hundreds of people step on the bridge about 2km long. Event continues until midnight.

Gyeongpodae Cherry Blossom Festival

Gyeongpodae Cherry Blossom Festival, which first started in 1993, is held at Gyeongpodae and its neighboring area for a week at the time of cherry blossom. At the peak of the floral season, various cultural and artistic events take place day and night.

Summer Beach Art Festival

Summer Beach Art Festival began at Gyeongpo and Jumunjin beach in 1992 to attract the visitors' attention and give them chances to enjoy the unique culture and art of Gangneung region. At first. the festival started as a local one enjoyed by residents and visitors together. Now many foreign performers are invited and International Junior Art Festival is held at this time. The festival is growing world-wide and more and more people, especially the young come to enjoy the summer fever and the energy.


Heo-gyun . Heo-nan-seol-heon Cultural Festival

In order to enhance the innovative thoughts of Heo-gyun who led the political and social reformation in the mid-Choseon, the dark period, and to cherish the memory of Heo-nan-seol-heon who had an outstanding literary talent, this festival is held in early September in their home site, Chodang-dong, Gangneung city. The festival is usually composed of International academic forum, Women’s writing contest, Recitation of poems written by Heo-gyun and Heo-nan-seol-heon, Chodang pine grove concert, Memorial event for Gyosan Heo-gyun, Memorial event for Nan-seol-heon, Hong-gil-dong cartoon drawing contest, Hong-gil-dong puppet show, etc.


So-geum-gang Cheong-hak-je Festival

On the second weekend of October every year, So-geum-gang Cheong-hak Festival is held in So-geum-gang, which is named after Mt. Geum-gang because its beautiful, clear waterfalls and strange looking rocks remind climbers of the spectacular image of Mt. Geum-gang in North Korea. Literally So-geum-gang means small Geum-gang. So-geum-gang is also called Mt. Cheong-hak, which means a blue crane, because the shape of the mountain looks like a crane with its wings expanded. The area was designate as Mt. Odea National Park in 1975 and since the next year Sogeumgang Prosperity Committee has been in charge of the festival. Campfire, fireworks, music and dance performance are held on the eve of the festival. The festival begins with a ritual praying for a good harvest, welfare and safety. The performance of farmer's band is followed by tug-of-war, treasure hunting, mountain climbing and hiking.


Great Scholar Yul-gok Lee-i Festival

Yul-gok Lee-i was born on December 26, 1536 (Jeongjong’s 31st year) of the lunar calendar in Mong-ryong Chamber(a chamber of dreaming a dragon) of O-juk-heon, Jukheon-dong, Gangneung city. He was a great scholar, politician, philosopher, and educator of Choseon Dynasty. To adore his virtue, Great Scholar Yul-gok Lee-i Festival has been held since 1962. The memorial ceremonies are served on October 25 and 26 every year. With celebration ceremonies, various events of art and literature are held before and after the period. The great scholar and his teaching became the traditional assets cherished by all the citizens in Gangneung.
